Much of her early work was autobiographical, influenced by her strong sense of her Mexican culture and her love of Indigenous folk art. Kahlo joined the Mexican Communist Party in the late s and was introduced to a circle of political activists and artists, among them Diego Rivera , whom she married in She traveled extensively in the United States with Rivera beginning in as he undertook mural projects in San Francisco and opened his retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
He was working on a mural project in Detroit when Kahlo experienced a miscarriage following a difficult pregnancy. In her recovery, to combat her depression she was convinced to try lithography at a local printmaking workshop, where she struggled with the medium. One of only six known impressions from this experience, El aborto is the only significant print she ever made, graphic in its anatomical references to her miscarriage but powerful in its symbolism.
Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo were an explosive couple. He carried a pistol. She carried a flask. He romanticized Detroit. She rejected it. But what they shared was a belief in communism, a thirst for tequila and a passion for each other. Discover how they left their mark on Detroit. It is impossible to separate the life and work of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo—her art is her biography. After surviving a crippling traffic accident when she was a teenager, Kahlo turned her attention from a medical career to painting.
She spent the rest of her life expressing her inner emotions on canvas. Drawing on personal experiences, her works are often shocking in their stark portrayal of pain and the harsh lives of women. The fetus is based on a medical illustration. An orchid looks like a uterus. The stomach she holds against the red ribbons and they look like umbilical cords. The snail is the symbol of the slowness of the operation. This painting is also the first painting Frida used sheet metal as its support.
Diego Rivera wanted to improve Frida's mood after the miscarriage and encouraged her to try to paint on tin panels.
